Shan Juan finds a luxurious stay and menu of delights tailor-made for each guest.

If you want to escape the summer heat and have a short but relaxing holiday to recharge, the cool and airy Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou on the shore of the Pearl River is an appealing choice.

The quiet and elegant hotel with a picturesque 5,800-square-meter landscaped garden is in a world away from today's hustle and bustle, with exceptional services and understated, high-class luxury.

The Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou recently began offering a "Gourmet Indulgence" package tailor-made for guests with exquisite taste and rare sensitivity.

Once called Canton, Guangdong province's Guangzhou is renowned for its culinary culture. More than 2,200 years' development has resulted in Cantonese cuisine's celebrated flavors, textures and 21 cooking techniques.

"In a city renowned for its culinary history, we believe providing a dynamic gourmet experience in one spot to discerning travelers will be an exceptional experience that they are looking forward to when visiting Guangzhou," Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou's Director of Sales and Marketing Jane Li says.

The two-night stay starts with a limousine ride from Baiyun International Airport. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a welcome kit by a personal "culinary butler", followed by club-floor check-in to a Horizon Club Riverview room.

The butler then makes appointments for guests to meet with the chef, who will get acquainted with their individual tastes and preferences. The chef will later work with head chefs at the hotel's five restaurants and craft a menu for the following night. All the guests have to do is to wait for their very own hassle-free culinary adventure.

Club-floor privileges feature a buffet breakfast, all-day beverages, evening cocktails during which guests can enjoy at the 34th floor of the hotel with an unobstructed view of the Pearl River, late checkout until 6 pm and use of a meeting room for two hours a day.

The highlight of the stay is the restaurant-hopping dinner the next evening. Guests enjoy one dish at each of the hotel's five stylish restaurants.

"The culinary butler accompanies guests from one restaurant to the other and introduces every dish, including ingredients, unique cooking methods and the stories behind them," Li explains.

"We have eight food and beverage outlets that offer Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian and Southeast Asian cuisine, as well as a large operations team to ensure the dining experience is authentic. Guests wouldn't find such an extraordinary experience in any other hotel."

All dishes can be enjoyed in a preferred restaurant served by the friendly waitstaff from the other four restaurants. Room service is also available.

The following morning or afternoon, guests learn how to make a dish of their choice in a private cooking class. It could be a dessert, a main dish or even a cocktail. A specially designed culinary certificate will be issued by the hotel with the chef's signature at the completion of the class.

To commemorate the exclusive gourmet experience, special mementos are given to guests upon their departure. The journey ends with the hotel's limousine send-off to the airport.

Equipped with a wide range of facilities, the Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou offers a variety of activities that can entertain for weeks and equally serve those who prefer to stay active or just relax.

The 1,500-square-meter outdoor pool with a children's pool embedded amid lush landscaped gardens is a relaxing treat, while the heated indoor swimming and children's pools can be used year-round.

The adjoining Jacuzzi, sauna and steam bath expel tiredness and tension from the mind and body. A special shower offers alternate warm orange-scented and chilled mint-scented sprays, allowing better blood circulation through the contrast of cool and warm

A friendly tennis match or a golf practice session of "approach and putt" can easily be arranged on the hotel's tennis court or 2,000-sq-m backyard putting green.
