Built in 1953, Haizhu Square lies in the junction of central axis of old town and the Pearl River. Subtropical plants such as palm trees and kapok trees are planted on the square. In the middle of the square stands the Statue of Liberation Army in Guangzhou, memorizing the historical moment of the city's liberation on November 14th 1949. The square is now under reconstruction, the south side of which has expanded directly facing the riverbank so that people can have a best view of the river scenes.
