Lingnan puppet show performance art was introduced from Zhejiang and Fujian into Guangdong during the Yuan Dynasty. During the late Qing Dynasty and early period of the Republic of China, puppet show was already popular in streets of Guangzhou, which was mainly performed near the City God’s Temple, Huangsha, Xiguan, Liwan and on deity’s birthday and temple fairs of the countryside. Lingnan puppet show’s performing techniques are famous for their exquisiteness and vividness, which can be classified into several types, including wooden rod puppet show, hand puppet and marionette. The carving and production of puppet figures are based on the local traditional operas, which are exquisite in workmanship. The combination and linkage device for the eyes of puppet figures is wonderful. Lingnan puppet show performance art is closely related with the folk customs, religious beliefs and local operas of Lingnan, which is exquisite, strong, gentle and charming.
