Located in the center of Guangzhou, covering an area of nearly 42 hectares, Guangzhou Zoo receives nearly 5 million visitors from home and abroad every year. It is one of the urban zoos in China with the largest varieties and quantity of animals. The Zoo is not only rated as the top ten zoos in the country by Ministry of Construction, but also recognized as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction by China National Tourism Administration. It is also known as the three major zoos along with Beijing Zoo and Shanghai Zoo.
Since its establishment in 1958, Guangzhou Zoo is not only the Guangzhou Wildlife Research Center, but also the most distinctive science education base in Guangzhou. In 2013 it has more than 450 kinds of mammals, reptiles, birds and fish from all over the country and around the world, totaling 4500 in quantity, many of which belong to the world's rare birds and animals; 35 kinds of national first-level key protected animals including giant pandas, golden monkeys and black-necked cranes; 32 kinds of national second-level key protected animals including small pandas and white-naped cranes. It is also a garden for plant display. There are more than 200 kinds of trees planted in the whole zoo, totaling over 100,000 plants.
